Barbara Res, former executive vice president of construction and development for the Trump Organization, recently clarified a false claim made by Donald Trump about a helicopter ride in the 1990s. Trump claimed that he was accompanied by Willie Brown, former mayor of San Francisco, during an emergency helicopter landing. However, according to Res, that was not the case.
Speaking to Ali Vitali on MSNBC, Res explained that the incident occurred while they were engaged with various political figures on a major development project in California. “One of the key figures was Nate Holden, a former California state senator, not Willie Brown,” Res said.
During a press conference Thursday, Trump recalled the flight, describing a tense emergency landing and mentioning Brown’s nervous reaction. He even mentioned a conversation with Brown that allegedly included critical comments about Vice President Kamala Harris, whom Brown had briefly dated.
Res questioned Trump’s recollection of those involved. “It’s been three decades and I wouldn’t be surprised if Donald confused Nate with Willie,” he said.
Trump had defended his version of events following a New York Times report, citing “maintenance logs and witnesses” to bolster his claims. However, Willie Brown himself denied ever being on a helicopter with Trump in a statement to NBC News on Friday, humorously dismissing the misunderstanding.
Nate Holden, speaking to Politico on Friday, confirmed that he was indeed the individual accompanying Trump on that helicopter ride to Atlantic City to inspect the new Taj Mahal casino. Res supported Holden’s story, noting that while the Teterboro landing was unplanned, it was controlled and everyone was safe. He also shared a lighthearted moment after the incident, in which Trump humorously noted Holden’s pale reaction to the scare.
This clarification by Res adds a new dimension to the narrative, distinguishing fact from misremembered details in an anecdote that has been told with significant errors regarding the identities involved.
